Back to School and rehabing at Home

7th grade and 5th grade here we come! Schedules have been obtained and they’re as prepared as they’re gonna get. I have a few more shoes and clothes coming for them, but we are basically done! Having to do everything mostly online this year was much easier than I expected.

I’m looking forward to getting my MRI to see what my next steps are in this sciatica fiasco. I hardly eat or sleep lately, but I don’t care so long as I’m healing. Pain just makes me kinda nauseated and I’m not doing enough to make me tired. I’m a really high energy person, so laying around is not my thing. So frustrating! I could get pain pills or muscle relaxers, but for now I’m refusing. I’m just taking Advil/Tylenol Dual Action when absolutely necessary. I wouldn’t even take pain meds when I had my wisdom teeth removed last year. I hate them… they make me feel itchy and crazy.

I’m able to get around the house a little bit better. I make my bed, clean up a little in the kitchen every morning but then that’s about it. Gary’s been cooking, doing laundry and dishes etc for 8 weeks (with the help of the kids too).

They don’t mind and everyone is pretty good at cleaning up after themselves so it’s not been too bad. The biggest thing is me needing him to wrap my leg, help me get dressed, apply my tens units and help me in and out of the tub. I can’t even pull my panties up or get a bra on. I’ve never had an injury like this. My guess is that I’m looking at a herniated disc in my back and possibly still a torn tendon (mostly healed) but some nerve compression in my calf and I’ll probably need steroid injections and PT for a while.

I’m doing weights in bed constantly just to keep my muscles moving but I have to be really careful WHAT I’m doing. That’s how I got in the mess to begin with. I try to move from bed to bed a lot. Staying in one place becomes painful. I play musical beds/couches all day. I just hope I can find a PT that will come here. I found a massage therapist that can come but I need to get the MRI before he will even touch me.

I’ve just gotta be patient and do what I’ve gotta do. It’s weird because nothing looks injured. No swelling, bruising, nothing… just extreme nerve pain.

Sciatica is awful. God bless anyone dealing with it. It is not fun. 🤍 If you have any tips or advice, I’d love to hear them!

  1. It’s hard to believe it’s back to school time already! I have suffered with sciatic nerve pain for years, so I know what you are going through, Jennifer (though I have never had it completely lay me out, like it has, you.) Being on my feet eight hours a day at work is really painful. I found this doctor on fb and the stretches he demonstrates really help me a lot. I have also tried some of the other things, like the ones for stiff neck, which I wake up with often, and the ones to help you sleep better at night. Maybe some of these will help you, too.

    • I will sure try them! Ive tried several nerve glides and stretches but some of them made it worse.😭 I’ve never felt anything like this. I worked retail for years and I would get back pains pretty badly, and I had sciatic pain in my hips at the end of my pregnancies but this has been the strangest thing! It’s mostly in my calf and top of foot and occasionally I feel it in my hip and back. Everyone keeps saying is likely my L5 with that nerve path. I’m just at a loss as to what to do at this point. 😭

    • Jean I just started reading on his website and I like his approach already bc he’s talking inflammatory!! I suffer from inflammation since going into perimenopause and I do think it’s made this worse. Thank you! I will be listening to all of his suggestions!
