What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?

Literally not until the moment that I held my son. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I was 37 when I had him, but I had never truly felt that responsible for anything other than myself before.

It changed my entire life the moment that I held him. And it definitely changed my husband. It just grew us up in a completely different way.

You immediately become secondary in everything. You’re the last one to eat, you’re the last one that buys anything for themselves, you become the last person on the totem pole. And it’s been that way ever since.

If that sounded like a bad thing, I apologize because it’s the most amazing experience that a human can have. My heart aches for people who A- don’t get to experience it and B- take it for granted and don’t realize what a precious gift it is.

But yes, that’s when I really became an adult and I’m so glad that I did.

Being your husband and the father of those kids is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
