One of my own.

I keep a little file of quotes on my iPad, and this one is probably my favorite because, after all this time, it still rings true.

People think they know a lot about you when, in reality, they know very little. They create versions of you that fit their own motives or help them justify their own emotions. They make assumptions based on a tiny glimpse of your life while overlooking everything they can’t see.

It’s a strange thing to experience, but over time it makes you stronger. Eventually, you realize that people don’t always respond to who you are. More often, they’re responding to the story they’ve created about you because it serves some need within themselves.

But the most important thing is that I know exactly who I am. That’s an immeasurable thing.
