If you read the post I made earlier about the kids school , I was just gonna add this. I was just talking to my friend Casey. She was Gage’s 5th grade teacher, and even though she didn’t have Norah Harper this year, she sees her all the time and she’s been great at keeping me in the loop of everything that’s going on.
Anyway, last month she let me know that she was leaving after 26 years of teaching because she found a job working in education with the Prison here. She has a Masters, which the job required it because it’s literally over the entire education department. So obviously, I was very excited for her!!!
But she said today, was the first time in a few years that she felt really safe and yet she was surrounded by inmates. She said all of the adults in the program seem so excited to learn and that they’re so grateful for an opportunity to get an education, and that they all say yes ma’am and no ma’am and treat her with such respect.
It’s crazy to think that she’s getting more respect from inmates than she did fifth grade graders.
Again, this is a parent problem. Now it might very well be a school system issue as well, as far as raises are concerned, but the abuse teachers take is directly impacted by these children’s home lives.
She made me laugh, but it also kind of made me wanna cry when she said, unfortunately, I’ll probably see a lot of of those kids again one day. 🫣
We’ve all gotta do better.
