Back to our Roots

I was talking to a friend of mine last night and she’s been getting into sourdough recently and they’ve been canning lots of vegetables and meal prepping. I never saw her doing this, because she has such a busy lifestyle, but she’s loving it and has found it therapeutic like I do. They used to eat out like 4. nights a week and now she’s cooking and loving it.

I think I’m part of a very overstimulated generation (I’m 47) that’s learned to find peace by curating homes that we feel comfortable, safe and productive in. I think we’re torn between being part of this new modern world and also wanting to go back to simplicity. We love creating thoughtful, artful spaces and food that our families enjoy. It’s like a very peaceful and cathartic type of busyness. It doesn’t feel manic or stressed- it feels very natural.

We’re realizing you don’t have to be off-grid with 10+ acres of land or a have a farm to be able to enjoy some of the perks of homesteading or being a homemaker. In fact, we can dedicate more time to our families and be more resourceful by using the endless information on the internet and sharing ideas with others on social media. It just takes balance. I’m finding I can’t stand to be online or on a screen all day. I need to be hands on and productive throughout the day, but I also really like social media, and still want to eat dinner at the table with my family every night. I think we’re learning to use these resources better and it’s a pathway back to slower living for a lot of us. I hope our kids continue that trend and stay grounded.
