Amazon Must Haves for Sourdough

I asked myself earlier what it was that I really needed to know when I first started down this rabbit hole. What did I really need to get started? And now looking back, what I didn’t.

So here’s a few things I can share. You do not need a mixer. My husband offered to purchase me a KitchenAid mixer and I’m so glad that I didn’t want one. I have always said that I just don’t bake enough to buy one, and that hasn’t changed at all. I have a 99$ mixer from Drew Barrymore’s line and it’s all I need. We don’t eat many sweets and I’ve not ever used it for this sourdough process. Sourdough is a very gentle process and there’s zero kneading involved. Not to mention, the clean up would be massive if you use a mixer. Sourdough is just too easy to mix unless you have arthritis or a reason you can’t, which I have done people mention that they do that. In that case a mixer could be used.

You do not need an expensive Dutch Oven. I feel kinda weird saving this because I just ordered a Le Creuset Bread Oven, BUT I’ve proven to myself that this is something I’m going to be doing frequently. You certainly don’t NEED a 300$ Dutch oven to make good bread. I have been using my 45$ one from Walmart and it’s been fine. Here’s the link.

And here is a list of all the things I personally think you DO need.

Danish bread whisk. They are wonderful. I have a short handled one, and a long handled one.

Bench Scrapers – not only great for separating your dough, but I use mine to slide my dough ball and create tension when I’m shaping.

A good Dough Mat (unless you want to use your counter. I have granite, but cannot stand to work on the surface.)

Bannetons – I have these and and a set of silicone. They both work well.

A good clear container with measurements. This one is my favorite!

Bread Lame. I prefer a UFO and I also use my exacto knife.

Rice Flour for scoring and dusting.

Good Kitchen Towels! I like waffle ones because they pick up the flour.

A good SMOCK that closes on the sides. Sourdough is messy!!! I have a few of these, and they’re awesome. I use them for everything.

A Bread Sling! So you can get your loaf out quickly without burning your fingers.

These are things I use every single time, so I hope it help you get started!!!
